Questions About Ordering Your Picture Frame?
We’ve answered the questions customers ask us most often about measuring, glazing, mounts, delivery and ordering made-to-measure picture frames.
If you’re unsure about anything before placing your order, have a look through the questions below. We’ve kept the answers straightforward and easy to follow.
Measuring for your frame
Enter the exact width and height of the picture, print or artwork you want to frame.
Measure the artwork itself edge to edge in millimetres. You do not need to add anything for the frame rebate or manufacturing allowance because we calculate that for you.
No. Please measure the actual artwork or picture that will be going into the new frame.
Measuring an old frame can give you the wrong size because different mouldings have different widths and rebates.
Measure the width at more than one point and do the same for the height.
If there is only a small difference, use the largest width and largest height when placing your order.
Yes, but the ordering system uses millimetres. Simply multiply your centimetre measurement by 10.
For example, 40cm becomes 400mm.
Our full Measuring Guide explains exactly what to measure and includes a simple example.
Choosing your frame
Yes. Each frame is made individually to the measurements you enter when ordering.
Your frame is made for your particular piece of artwork rather than being taken from a standard ready-made size.
Our made-to-measure frames are produced in our Bedford workshop.
We offer a range of frame mouldings, including real wood options in different colours, profiles and finishes.
The details shown with each frame option will help you see the material, width and other relevant specifications before you choose.
Some mouldings have a maximum recommended frame size. Once you enter your artwork measurements, any frame that is not suitable for that size will be shown as unavailable.
Yes. Your frame can be used portrait or landscape depending on the orientation of your artwork.
Choosing glazing for your frame
We offer several glazing choices depending on the level of clarity, reflection reduction and UV protection you require.
These include clear acrylic, anti-glare acrylic, UV protective acrylic and, for frames collected from our Bedford workshop, a selection of glass and specialist Artglass options.
Acrylic is much lighter than glass and is far less likely to break during transport, which makes it a practical choice for frames being delivered.
Glass has a more traditional feel and we offer several specialist glass options for customers collecting their frames from our Bedford workshop.
Anti-glare glazing is designed to reduce distracting reflections, which can make artwork easier to view in rooms with windows, lamps or other strong light sources.
UV protective glazing helps reduce the amount of harmful ultraviolet light reaching your artwork. This can help slow fading and deterioration caused by exposure to light.
It is particularly worth considering for photographs, prints and artwork that you would like to protect for the long term.
No. Frames containing glass or Artglass are available for collection only from our Bedford workshop.
For frames being delivered, please choose one of our acrylic glazing options or select no glazing if appropriate for your artwork.
Yes. You can select No Glass when configuring your frame if your artwork does not require glazing.
Frames with picture mounts
A picture mount is the border that sits between your artwork and the frame. An aperture is cut into the mount so that your picture can be viewed through the opening.
As well as improving the presentation, a mount creates visual space between the artwork and the frame.
Not necessarily. A frame without a mount gives a clean, simple appearance, while adding a mount gives the artwork more breathing space and can create a more traditional or gallery-style finish.
Photographs, fine art prints, watercolours and certificates are often framed with a mount, but the final choice is largely down to the look you prefer.
Our core mount colours include white, ivory and black, giving you a choice of neutral finishes that work with a wide variety of artwork and frame styles.
No. The mount aperture needs to overlap the edge of the artwork slightly so that the picture sits securely behind the mount without falling through the opening.
We calculate this allowance when producing your mount, so you do not need to reduce the artwork measurements yourself.
Yes. Choose our Frames With Mounts option and enter the size of your artwork. You can then choose your frame and mount options together.
Receiving your frame
Yes. Free delivery is included on our made-to-measure picture frames throughout the UK.
This includes Northern Ireland, the Scottish Highlands and UK islands.
Yes. Collection is available from our Bedford workshop.
This is also required if you choose a frame containing real glass or specialist Artglass.
Your frame will be carefully packed to help protect it while it is in transit.
Because delivered frames use acrylic rather than glass, there is also much less risk of breakage during transport.
No. Frames containing glass or Artglass are available for collection only from our Bedford workshop.
For delivery, please choose one of the acrylic glazing options or select no glazing if that is suitable for your artwork.
Please contact us as soon as possible if your order arrives damaged.
We ask that damage is reported within 48 hours of delivery and that you send clear photographs of the damaged frame and the packaging so that we can investigate and help resolve the problem.
Your made-to-measure order
Yes. Each frame is made to the measurements and options you select when you place your order.
This means your frame is a bespoke, made-to-measure product rather than a standard ready-made frame.
Please contact us as quickly as possible if you realise you have entered the wrong size or selected the wrong option.
Because our frames are made to order, we may not be able to make changes once production has started.
Our made-to-measure frames are produced specifically to the measurements and options supplied by you.
Because they are bespoke products, we do not normally accept returns or exchanges where the order has been made correctly to the details provided.
If we have supplied something incorrectly, please contact us and we will investigate the issue and arrange the appropriate solution.
Photographs can often help us understand the problem quickly.
